Council pay up for discussion

Regional Council will vote this week on a topic near and dear to the heart of every tax paying citizen: the salary the councillors receive.
A report comes from the Citizens Advisory Committee on Council Compensation says the base pay levels of Councillors, the Regional Chair, and Committee Chairs are fine as they are.
The committee only recommends an automatic increase in base pay if the consumer price index goes up; ie., cost of living goes up three per cent, the base pay goes up three per cent.
However, councillors wouldn’t be looking at a pay decrease if the price index goes down.
The report comes up at Regional Council on Wednesday night.
Currently, Regional Council’s base pay is:
– Regional Chair base $139,919.00
– Regional Councillor base $38,423.00
– Committee Chair base $5,766.00 (in addition to Councillor base)
– Police Services Board Member base $10,034.00
– Police Services Board Chair base $12,901.00
The Citizens Advisory Committee on Council Compensation from 2000 said for Regional Council, the recommended base remuneration should be the average of councillor salaries from Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, plus 20% — that formula was approved at the time but not recommended as a formula to be used every time a pay increase comes up.
