Saying now was not the time to be discussing a pay increase, Waterloo Council voted down a recommendation from a Citizen’s Committee that would have given the next elected council a 6% wage hike and instead passed a motion to defer the matter until next March.
It’s standard practice in Waterloo to have an outgoing council, in an election year, vote on the next councils wages. But now instead of a previous council deciding a future council’s wages, the next Waterloo City Council will have all the say on their income.
Mayor Brenda Halloran tells 570 News is was the right thing to do at this point in time because the city and its residents aren’t out of the woods yet from the recession.
The move seems to be inline with public sentiment, yesterday’s 570 News poll question asked should council get the proposed hike and 91% responded ‘no’.
Chair of the Citizen’s Committee, Michael Snyders disagreed with the deferral motion, saying Waterloo’s municipal leaders are already making less than the average mayor and council when compared to similar cities.
He adds the overall cost to taxpayers would only be $15,000.
