OPP officer in critical condition

An OPP officer is in critical condition after pulling over an armed suspect near Winthrop, about one hour north of London.

OPP Police Commissioner Julian Fantino says Constable Vu Pham was shot by the suspect and “immediately incapacitated” shortly after 10 o’clock this morning.

Fantino says other officers in the area confronted the 70-year-old suspect, who was shot and is in hospital.

Pham is a 15-year veteran of the force.

He is a married father of three sons.

Eyewitnesses say 15 to 20 shots were exchanged between an officer and the suspect from across a two-lane rural road.

Reports say the officer was in surgery with a head injury.
