Chile quake death toll tops 700

Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet says Saturday’s earthquake killed at least 708 people _ sharply increasing the known death toll.
The president told a news conference today that the country faces “a catastrophe of such unthinkable magnitude that it will require a giant effort” for Chile to recover.
She spoke after a six-hour meeting with aides and emergency officials coping with the magnitude-8.8 quake.
Officials had earlier put the death toll at 300.
