Battling the elements on the roads

Plows and salters hit the highways and roads today to clear away the blowing and drifting snow and the slush that collected overnight and well into rush hour.
In Kitchener, Manager of Operational Support, Dan Locke, tells 570 News there was less than eight centimetres of actual snowfall in the city, but they were out fighting the icing roads and the packed snow.
He says 15 salters and 20 plows fought the winter weather this morning, and more work is expected for tonight.
Locke says the wind made blowing snow a problem: they’d plow out a route and then have to go back and plow it again.
Locke says there has to be at least eight centimetres of snow to meet the criteria for making side roads a priority.
As it is today, Locke says they’ll focus on the main arterial routes, but will get to the side roads when they can.
And with less than eight centimetres of snow, there was no need to call a “snow day”, which would compel all motorists to get their parked cars off all city streets.
