The Mennonite Central Committee says it will likely have one thousand relief kits packed by the end of the day to send to earthquake victims in Haiti.
Former MCC International Program Director, Ray Brubaker, is volunteering this week in the collection and packing of the kits, made up of donated band-aids, toothbrushes, bed sheets to use as mosquito netting, and more.
Brubaker tells 570 News sending bulk items directly from a factory would of course be more cost-efficient, but the hands-on quality of donating needed items is something money can’t buy.
MCC’s Material Resources Co-Ordinator for Ontario, Trevor Adams says over 100 volunteers helped do the packing on Friday.
Staff from 570 News, and our sister stations, CHYM-FM and KIX 106 were on hand to help out.
Adams says the MCC goal across North America is to send 20 thousand relief kits to Haiti, he figures that number will be surpassed.
He says right now they are running short of large tooth combs and laundry bar soap.
A complete list of the items needed can be found here. **Please note: the MCC will continue to collect items for kits throughout February
