Festival staff face-off in Hockey Day game

The skates are sharpened, the goalie pads are being strapped on and the players are ready to hit the stage, or rather the ice.

As part of the festivities leading up to Saturday’s 10th Annual Tim Hortons Hockey Day in Canada, actors and staff from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival will face off in a hockey game at Allman Arena at 2:00 p.m. today.

Jonathan Purdon is part of the actors team, he tells 570 News they’ve been practicing ahead of Friday’s game.
Purdon says ever since James Walker, the Festival’s applications development manager, came up with the idea everyone has been keen to play – if only as a last chance to be scouted by the NHL.

The opposing team includes stagehands, members of the IT department and carpenters.

Festival General Director Antoni Cimolino will be on hand to drop the puck.

All proceeds will go to support Stratford Rotary House League Hockey, Stratford Minor Hockey, Stratford Girls Hockey Association and the Stratford Junior Hockey Club.

On Saturday, Don Cherry will host CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada from the Allman Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m.
