Regional hospitals to do more with less in the future

Waterloo Region’s hospitals of the future could be leaner, but not more expensive to run.
That was the message during a discussion put on by Kitchener’s Children’s Museum yesterday.
Leaders of all three hospitals took part in a panel discussion and all agreed funding and an aging population are key challenges they’ll have to tackle, but they also agreed the appropriate allocation of funding is more important than receiving more cash from the government.
Monday’s Record reports St. Mary’s General Hospital President Moira Taylor said “We all need to get our heads around there being less money,” while acting President and CEO of Cambridge Memorial, Patrick Gaskin said there’s “too much waste” within hospitals.
Grand River Hospital CEO Malcolm Maxwell maintains hospitals need to look at companies such as Toyota, which have survived and grown by looking for efficiencies within their operations.
