Up to 50-thousand feared dead in Haiti

The international Red Cross estimates up to 50-thousand people were killed in Tuesday’s magnitude-7.0 earthquake in Haiti.
Roughly 150 Canadians caught in the quake arrived in Montreal early Friday morning. 100 of them were brought home on the same military plane that carried Canadian soldiers and supplies to the disaster zone Thursday. The plane was followed to Montreal by a second military plane carrying about 50 Canadians. Priority has been given to bringing back injured people, women and children. The evacuees were selected by staff at the Canadian embassy, which remains functional despite sustaining damage in this week’s earthquake.
Four Canadians have died as a result of the quake and others are missing.
RCMP Sergeant Mark Gallagher of Nova Scotia is the latest confirmed fatality. He was part of the UN force that is training Haitian police officers.
He was found dead under rubble in Port-au-Prince while another Mountie and several other Canadians are unaccounted for.
Elmira nurse, Yvonne Martin was the first Canadian confirmed death.
