A Conestoga College student isn’t going to let tomorrow’s faculty strike vote happen without at least trying to do something about it.
First-year public relations student, Jason Paul tells 570 News he has organized what he calls a student “walk-over” — not a walkout — to deliver petitions to the union and college administrators to please continue negotiations.
Paul is part of a larger Facebook group of college students all around the province seeking the same goal.
Paul says other colleges are planning larger events like a one-hour walkout.
But for Conestoga, he will lead a small group of students to OPSEU and administration offices at noon Tuesday to deliver petitions signed students.
Paul says students are afraid a strike could could run into the summer, and could mean coursework would have to be condensed.
He adds students depend on summer employment and need to know what’s happening in terms of summer accommodations — a lingering strike could endanger all that.
Paul says the Facebook group hasn’t planned any further action for now because the strike vote hasn’t happened yet — it’s set for Wednesday.
Paul says in the meantime he’s been interviewing and getting comments from OPSEU and council negotiating teams.
