The highly-anticipated roster for the Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team will be unveiled today at noon, and the 23 players given the nod will carry the weight of a nation’s high expectations.
Canada will take to the ice at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, and hockey-mad fans in the host nation will accept nothing less than a gold medal. Pittsburgh star centre Sidney Crosby and record-setting New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur are expected to lead a Canadian team looking to build on a disappointing performance at the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy.
Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo and Calgary Flames forward Jarome Iginla are among the Canadian-based players considered locks to make the team.
Other strong candidates include the San Jose trio of Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau. Boston’s Patrice Bergeron and Ottawa’s Mike Fisher are on the bubble but may have played their way onto the team with strong NHL seasons.
