By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Waterloo Regional Police have provided an update on a house explosion in Kitchener late Wednesday evening.

Police announced Thursday night that the cause has been deemed criminal in nature by the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office.

On Friday, a search warrant was completed at the home. Police said evidence was seized that is consistent with illicit drug production and criminal charges are anticipated.

Emergency crews responded to a townhouse unit at 150 Elm Ridge Drive, shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The explosion caused extensive damage. There is significant structural damage to that unit and other neighbouring units.

Debris was scattered in the yard of the unit where the explosion occurred. Windows were also smashed out on the ground and second floor.

A woman and man remain in hospital. They were transported to a hospital outside of the region with serious injuries.

Two children were also taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. They have since been released.
