Spring has arrived in Waterloo Region

By Brad Kraemer

The first day of spring is here, with the season officially starting at 5:24 p.m. Monday afternoon.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson, 5:24 is the “Spring Equinox,” which is when the sun is directly over the equator, and hours of daylight and darkness are roughly the same across the globe.

As for weather this week, Coulson said Waterloo Region will be around seasonal values. The normal highs are around five degrees and overnight lows are around minus four. Thursday is the warm outlier, with highs expected around 13 degrees. Don't start planning a day outside just yet though, as Coulson also predicted clouds and rain.

He also warned that we might not be done with snow just yet either, predicting snowfall on Saturday, and although it's too soon to predict just how much snow the region will get, Coulson said it comes down to the temperature.

“If we do get temperatures climbing well above the freezing mark on Saturday and see a transition over to rain, that will keep the snow amounts relatively low. But if temperatures remain just above the freezing mark, and the event is mostly snow, then it could be another broad, general snowfall in excess of 10 centimetres for many areas.”

Coulson also gave advice to Waterloo Region residents.

“Well certainly at this time of year, layers is probably a good idea,” said Coulson, saying days can be quite pleasant but nights still get quite chilly.

“The best advice for this time of year is to keep all of your winter clothing handy just in case, you may still need to shovel over the course of the next couple of weeks. It's certainly a good idea to hand onto those snow tires.”
