‘You make me melt’: Mother Nature gifts warm up for Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day marks the start of another warm up in southern Ontario.

Starting Saturday, daytime highs in Waterloo Region will rise to 2 C, and by Feb. 17, it could be as warm as 6 C.

Steven Flisfeder is a meteorologist with Environment Canada, and tells 570 NewsRadio this rise in temperatures is thanks to a pattern shift.

“The past weeks we’ve been stuck under this ridge of high pressure that was kind of blocking any new warmer air masses from making their way towards southern Ontario,” he said. “That is now weakening and pushing off to the east, which will allow new air masses to make their way to southern Ontario…bringing those temperatures to the positive side.”

Those temperatures will move to the positive side by a significant amount.

Highs of five and six degrees are well above seasonal, which is typically around -2 C.

So will it last? Just until about Tuesday said Flisfeder.

“Following that, there will be a decline back to the negative side, but it’s not expected, at least not now, to be those deep freezes we saw over the past couple of weeks. It’s going to be a return to more of what is normal for this time of year.”

Waterloo Region could see some mixed precipitation Wednesday, including rain.

The conditions have the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) keeping a close eye on waterways as there is the potential for flooding, although the extent and timing remain uncertain at this time.
