Rogers outage affects wireless, internet customers Canada-wide (update)

By CityNews Staff

A major Rogers outage is affecting Canadians across the country, with many waking up Friday to find their wireless and internet services were down.

The cause of the issue is unknown at this time but the problem is confirmed to be affecting people nationwide.

Interac and Fido services are also reported to be down.

Rogers has posted an update to their Twitter page, saying they are aware of issues affecting the networks.

“We know how important it is for our customers to stay connected. We are aware of issues currently affecting our networks and our teams are fully engaged to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” a Rogers official wrote.

“Our teams are fully engaged to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We will continue to keep you updated as we have more information to share.”

The issues appear to have begun sometime around 4 a.m. EST. A timeline for when services will be restored has not yet been provided.

Interac tweeted the nationwide outage was impacting the ability of their services and further information will be provided as it comes available.

Many people have taken to social media to vent their frustrations amid the outage.

Meanwhile, some police agencies across the country have shared on Twitter that the outage may also affect a person’s ability to reach emergency services, including 911.

Service Canada tweeted it too was wrapped up in the outage with call centres and offices, including ones that issue passports, affected.

The outage stands to exacerbate passport delays that have left Canadians lined up outside Service Canada offices for lengthy periods of time as the government works through a backlog.

CBC Radio in Kitchener and Waterloo also reported the outage affected its programming Friday morning.

“The Morning Edition listeners will be hearing Metro Morning today. We will be back with you as soon as possible,” CBC said.

TekSavvy, an independent service provider, said in a tweet that it was being impacted by the outage and having trouble with contact centre phone lines. It noted it has no estimate for when there could be a resolution.
