Report proposes significant changes to Ed Newland Pool

By Jonathan Strom

A proposal regarding additional funding to the Ed Newland Pool Project is on the agenda at a Cambridge city council meeting tomorrow.

In a report, city staff are recommending making significant changes to the pool in order to make it more accessible and sustainable.

Previously, a budget of $462,600 had been approved for renovating the pool. However, the report says inflation and supply chain issues will increase the cost of renovation significantly.

As a result, the report not only requests additional funding for the project, but also a new design.

“Staff are recommending revising the scope of the project to redesign the pool, make it more inclusive and accessible and save on operating costs over the longer term,” the report reads.

One of the biggest changes the report recommends is eliminating the dive tank, and converting the pool to a single-tank structure.

Another change would be the addition of a 'beach entry' in order to allow for gradated entry into the shallow end, making the pool more accessible.

This is one of three options presented in the report. There is also the original renovation, and a third option which would remove the dive tank, but keep the existing footprint of the pool.

The recommendation is the most expensive of the three, however the report says it will save costs in the long-term.

“This option is anticipated to reduce ongoing operating costs on two fronts — both staffing and as a result of a significant reduction in water volume,” the report says.

By the end of 2025, Ed Newland will be the only outdoor pool in Cambridge.

“The opportunity to create a unique destination that is more inclusive, accessible, and friendly for all ages, is directly in line with the strategic goals and objectives of the City’s strategic plan,” the report states.

If city council approves the proposal, renovations would likely be complete by the summer of 2023.
