Region hits pause on SIS discussions; waiting for clear guidelines from province

By Christine Clark

Regional Council has decided to defer decision-making on specific safe injection sites until the province completes its review of harm-reduction practices.

After several hours of debate Tuesday, councillors pressed pause on the consultations regarding four proposed locations in Kitchener and Cambridge.

Council heard from Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig who asked that the two possible locations in the downtown Galt area of Cambridge be completely taken off the table.

However, council members unanimously voted to wait until the Ontario government makes its guidelines clear, something that won't happen until the end of September.

As it stands, the four potential sites include 150 Duke St. W and 115 Water St. N. in Kitchener, and 149 Ainslie St. N. and 150 Main St. in Cambridge.

Saying there is still a lot of public consultation on the matter to come, councillors also noted that staff would be unable to answer any questions from the public until they have all the information from the province.
