New development planned for empty lot at Mayfair Hotel site

A long standing eye sore in downtown Kitchener will soon have new life.

Developers plan to build an office building at the site of the former Mayfair Hotel at King Street and Young Street in downtown Kitchener.

The five story development, known as One Young Street, will feature 53,000 sq. ft. of retail and office space with a rooftop restaurant space that includes a large outdoor patio.

Developer Bernie Nimer chose Kitchener based Walter Fedy for the design.

In a release Nimer says the new building will pay tribute to the sites historic past, “Our design team at Walter Fedy, have spent a tremendous amount of care, time and effort in designing a stunning, high-quality structure, It pays respect to the site's history and we hope it will stand as a new marker on this important corner of the downtown.” said Nimer.

The lot has sat empty in downtown for the past three years.

The former Mayfair Hotel was determined to be structurally unsound and, despite protests from the heritage community, was torn down in the summer of 2015.

Initially there was a plan to turn the lot into greenspace or even a pop up park while the developer figured out a permanent plan, but those plans never materialized.

The $15 million project is set to get underway in the spring of 2019.
