Longtime Regional Councillor Strickland not running in fall election

Regional Councillor Sean Strickland has announced he will not be seeking re-election in October's municipal election.

“It has been an honour and privilege to represent the citizens of Waterloo in various elected capacities over the past 25 years and work with some fantastic colleagues and staff,” Strickland said in a statement. “Over these past few years, we strategically focused on the growth of the community and it’s been exciting to watch projects like the construction of ION help to position our Region for a prosperous future.”

Strickland was first elected to public office in 1993 as a trustee with the local public school board. He is wrapping up his sixth term as a regional councillor, representing Waterloo.

He has served on a number of committees including the Community Services Committee — which he is chair of, Administration and Finance, as well as the Budget and Audit Committees.

“We have accomplished a lot together including improved transit, roads, cycling infrastructure, additional affordable housing and social programs,” added Strickland.

“More work needs to be done and I believe the time has come for full-time councillors to better serve the community and provide improved stewardship. With 630,000 people and growing and an operating and capital budget of $1.5 billion, having dedicated, full-time councillors will allow the Region to better respond to citizen and neighbourhood needs.”

Municipal elections are set for Monday, October 24.
