KW Humane Society reducing adoption fees after a massive influx of cats

By Leah Johansen

While Spring brings a burst of kittens, the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society (KWHS) says the Summer brings overflowing adoption availabilities.

The organization is seeing a major increase of homeless and abandoned cats heading into the centre.

It's not just kittens without homes, KWHS says older cats are also being dropped off as people relocate and leave pets behind, as elderly owners pass on, or the animals are just left to fend for themselves outside.

To try to curb the influx of cats and kittens, the adoption fee was dropped from $210 to $100 for all cats over six months old. While 17 cats were adopted out, another 16 came into the centre during the same time period.

Over the last four days, 15 cats were adopted out, and 18 more have come in.

As of Thursday, 123 cats are in care at KWHS. Thirty-nine cats are in foster care, 13 are available for adoption, and 32 will be placed up for adoption shortly, with the remainder strays or under medical treatment.

Due to the dramatic increase in cats seeking homes, adoption fees have once again been reduced to $50 for all cats over six months old.

“Adopting from the KWHS gives you the best of both worlds,” says Executive Director, Kathrin Delutis in a press release. “You'll be giving a homeless cat a new lease on life and you'll be saving money at the same time.”

The KWHS says all pets adopted include a veterinary health exam, their spay or neuter, their first vaccines, deworming, their microchip and they are given 30 days of free pet insurance.
