Kitchener city council vote to denounce Bill 21

By Evan Taylor

The idea to denounce Bill 21 was first proposed by Kitchener City Councillor Margaret Johnston, in an effort to show support for minority communities.

Bill 21 prohibits some public employees from wearing religous symbols and garments, including hijabs which are a common headdress worn by Muslim women.

Fauzia Mazhar, Executive Director of the Coalition of Muslim Women of Kitchener Waterloo says it sends an important message.

“It shows that our politicians locally are concerned about religous freedom and sends a good message.”

She says while this bill does not directly affect residents of Kitchener, Muslims in the area do experiance regular examples of harrasment and abuse.

The vote is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Monday.
