Diabetes Canada has retrofitted around 4,000 of its donation bins across Canada.
It follows safety concerns after a number of accidental deaths.
They said the new modifications eliminate the possibility of someone getting stuck or caught inside the bins as they try to enter.
Diabetes Canada said their bins also now having warning signs and other visual markings to help prevent any tragedies.
Several people have been killed in donation bins in Canada since 2015, including a Cambridge man in November 2018.
