Several workers at EggSolutions in Elmira have tested positive for COVID-19.
A spokesperson for its parent company, Global Egg Corporation, confirmed the affected employees all work on the afternoon shift – thus, those operations have now been suspended.
“While a full review is ongoing, we are conducting a thorough deep cleaning of the entire facility, including common areas and offices. We will not restart afternoon shift operations again until we are confident that it is safe to return to work,” said the corporation's President, Aaron Kwinter, in an email statement.
Kwinter added, “As an essential company in the food production supply chain, Global Egg will remain dedicated and vigilant in protecting the health of our employees while maintaining a secure supply of the food that our customers in Canada need now more than ever.”
Global Egg Corporation is working closely with Region of Waterloo Public Health, the Ministry of Labour, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
As for why the plant hasn't closed entirely, Kwinter said, “As an essential company in the food production supply chain, Global Egg will remain dedicated and vigilant in protecting the health of our employees while maintaining a secure supply of the food that our customers in Canada need now more than ever.”
He added since the beginning of the pandemic, Global Egg has worked collaboratively with health authorities and industry associations to develop and implement best practices for the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19.
