Region reports 28 new COVID cases Friday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 28 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, although two were removed from the total due to data clean up.

There have been 21,020 local cases since March, 2020.

Hospitalizations are down to eight — five people are being treated in intensive care (Hospital data is current to Dec. 1).

The active caseload is down slightly to 230.

79.34 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 955,000 doses have been administered to local residents.

18.12 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose.

Here are some other updates from the region's COVID summary dashboard: 

  • 7,200 cases have screened positive for variants of concern – 3,127 are the Alpha variant – 21 are linked to the Beta variant – 3,692 are linked to the Delta strain – 98 are linked to the Gamma variant – 262 cases where a mutation has been detected 
  • The local death toll remains at 308. No new deaths were reported Friday
  • 20,479 resolved cases (97 per cent)
  • Over 649,000 tests have been done

There are 10 outbreaks in the region:

  • NEW St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School (4 cases)
  • NEW Lester B. Pearson Public School (2 cases)
  • Southridge Public School (4 cases)
  • Cedar Creek Public School – cohort (2 cases)
  • Construction 16 (3 cases)
  • Retail 18 (3 cases)
  • JHCC Riverside Childcare Centre (2 cases)
  • Manufacturing/industrial 45 (2 cases)
  • Transportation 4 (3 cases)
  • Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary School (20 cases)

Meanwhile, the province reported 1,031 new cases Friday — 504 were unvaccinated.

  • 87 per cent of those 12 and over have been fully vaccinated
  • 621,260 total cases
  • 604,027 resolved cases
  • In hospital due to COVID – 88 unvaccinated – 12 partially vaccinated – 61 fully vaccinated. ICU data – 70 unvaccinated – 5 partially vaccinated – 27 fully vaccinated
  • 10,016 deaths (4 new)
  • 39,749 tests completed Thursday — Over 19.85 million since January 15, 2020
