Autistic man in Guelph almost taken by suspects for cash and gifts

Guelph police are looking for two women who allegedly tried to take advantage of a young autistic man when he came over to try to help them out.

Police said they got a call, Monday afternoon, and officers went out to a plaza near Edinburgh Road South and Stone Road West.

According to police, a 19-year-old autistic man came out of a Walmart and saw two women with a sign asking for money for groceries. The young man and the two women went to another store, and the women allegedly picked out $200 worth of clothes that he paid for.

The trio then went to a bank, where he withdrew $1,000 and gave it to the two women.

After that, they went to a grocery store, and he paid for another $500 in groceries and gift cards for them.

Police said the women asked for even more cash, but when the young man tried to make another withdrawal, he found out he had reached his limit.

That’s when he reportedly called his mom, who came to his rescue, confronting the women who were still in the area.

Police said she got back most of the property.

Police described the suspects as being about 30 years old, with tanned skin, and medium builds.

One had red hair, worn in a bun, and a long black puffy coat; the other had dark hair, also in a bun, and was wearing a pink and black jacket.

Anyone who can help police find these women is urged to call Guelph Police at 519-824-1212, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers, by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by clicking here.
