Charges have officially been laid following a ION train collision in Kitchener, but the investigation is still ongoing.
The incident took place on Nov. 21, at around 9:40 a.m., when Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) received calls of a reported collision between a Dodge vehicle and an ION Light Rail Transit (LRT) vehicle on King Street West.
When emergency services arrived, they found the driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old man from Toronto, with non-life-threatening injuries and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.
The driver and passengers of the LRT were unharmed, with no physical injuries reported.
The collision derailed the LRT vehicle, causing road and rail closures in the area which stayed in effect for several hours as officers conducted their initial investigation and as repairs got underway.
The closures have since been lifted, with repairs now complete.
Following the initial investigation, the 31-year-old driver has now been charged with careless driving, turning not in safety, and driving with a hand-held communication device.
The investigation is still ongoing, with WRPS asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to call police at 519-570-9777, extension 6399.
