Nick Spaling to join Kitchener Rangers coaching staff

It’s a name the hockey community in Waterloo Region knows well – Nick Spaling is coming back to the Kitchener Rangers.
This time he’ll be on the bench as Assistant Coach for the 2026-27 season, alongside newly named Head Coach Jeff Kyrzakos.
His focus? The power play and leading the forwards.
“The opportunity to come back and be a part of an organization that has given me and means so much to me is beyond exciting,” said Spaling.
“I’m looking forward to joining Jeff, Brad and the whole staff and the great culture they have created here and can’t wait to get started.”
Spaling is no stranger to the Blueshirts or to Waterloo Region, drafted by the Kitchener Rangers in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection while skating for the Waterloo Wolves U16 AAA squad.
He played three seasons with the Rangers before moving on to the National Hockey League for seven seasons and then to Switzerland’s National League.
His time in the NHL saw him skate for Nashville, Pittsburgh, Toronto and San Jose.
“We’re thrilled to add Nick to our staff,” said Head Coach Jeff Kyrzakos.
“His playing experience speaks for itself. Being local and an alum who understands our community is huge. He will bring so many elements that help our hockey club and we’re looking forward to working with him every day.”
Behind the bench, Spaling is coming off an extraordinary season with the Cambridge RedHawks in the GOHL, winning the first Sutherland Cup in team history back in May.
The Kitchener Rangers open the new season at home on Friday, September 18 against the Owen Sound Attack.
