Pup, pup hooray! Kitchener becomes first ‘Better City for Pets’ in Canada

Kitchener City Council gets an extra treat for this one.

Working with Dog Friendly KW, the city has gone through the steps to officially be designated as a “Better City for Pets.”

Dog Friendly KW Director Justine Sparling said this is a big step forward for your furry friends.

“Not only has Kitchener become certified but the City of Kitchener is actually the first city in Canada to receive this certification. The only other community in Canada currently certified is the Town of Caledon.”

Dog Friendly KW, the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth, and the City of Kitchener will be working together over the next year.

They will be focusing on local pet bylaws, the importance of spaying, neutering and licensing pets, getting pets through ethical sources and proper pet care.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic said there are many pet owners in the community who will be happy to hear this.

“We certainly do a lot to try to make sure that we are an awesome community to live, work and play in, not just for the two-legged but four-legged as well!”
