No fireworks charges laid in Waterloo over long weekend

It was a quiet Victoria Day weekend in the City of Waterloo.

The City received approximately 17 calls related to fireworks over the three days of the long weekend.

“It’s certainly not unusual,” Director of Municipal Enforcement Services Nicole Papke told CityNews. “If anything, it seems actually a little bit low.”

No charges were laid, according to Papke. She added that Waterloo takes an education-based approach that includes warning people about the fireworks bylaw before issuing fines.

The City permits fireworks on the holiday as long as they’re set off before 11 p.m., as well as on the day immediately before or after.

“The weekend just seemed quiet in town, from my perspective … I don’t know if people were away,” said Papke. “The weather wasn’t that great on Saturday. It was kind of cooler. I don’t know if that was a factor or not. It’s really hard to say.”

A couple noise tickets were given out, but Papke doesn’t believe they were fireworks-related.
