Issue that led to multiple, temporary ION service disruptions Sunday under investigation

By Erin Anderson

Grand River Transit has confirmed an issue that led to multiple ION service disruptions on Sunday is under investigation.

According to Acting Director of Transit Services with the Region of Waterloo, Neil Malcolm, ION train service was halted three times during the morning, early afternoon, and evening commutes.

In an e-mail statement, Malcolm explained there was a communication issue involving train signals and power systems, which disrupted the connection to the ION control centre.

While the issue has been resolved, what caused the loss of communication is still being investigated.

ION service is running normally as of Monday, although Grand River Transit warned of an ongoing technical issue that impacted some passenger displays and announcements at ION stations.

Some stated that trains were not running, which is not the case.

Malcolm said, “ION service is running per normal [Monday], but some signs and passenger announcements are not yet back on-line.”
