Two new COVID-related deaths reported in region Friday

The health department in Waterloo confirmed two new COVID-related deaths on Friday. It raises the local death toll to 389.

There have been 28 deaths reported so far in February.

Hospitalizations have also increased by four to 64 — 15 patients are in intensive care.

67 new COVID-19 cases were also reported, although just 58 were added to the overall total due to data clean up. There have been 39,979 cases in the region since March, 2020.

The active caseload is 846.

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 694 of those cases (90.1 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since January 16.

84.4 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.27 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 279,000 third doses. 48.2 per cent of those 18 and over have received a third dose.

54.4 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 31.5 are fully vaccinated.

There are 24 outbreaks in the region — 10 are in long-term care or retirement homes. You can find the complete list of outbreaks on the region's dashboard.

Meanwhile, the province reported 2,337 new cases Friday. Among the new cases there are 303 unvaccinated people, 81 partially vaccinated people, 1,656 fully vaccinated people, and 297 people with unknown vaccination status.

  • 85 per cent of those 5 and over have been fully vaccinated
  • 1,281 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19, close to 51 per cent admitted because of COVID. There are 352 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-related illnesses

  • 1,048,624 resolved cases
  • 12,237 deaths (33 new)
  • 17,758 tests completed Thursday — Over 22.93 million since January 15, 2020
