Waterloo funeral home promoting safe distances for grieving families

By Tim Herd

Erb and Good Family Funeral Home continue to help families get through their grief as everyone is asked to practice social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rob Wintonyk is the Owner and Funeral Director of Erb and Good Funeral Home and recommends people put their hugs into words.

“Many of our websites in funeral service have an opportunity where people can write a condolence to the family … that is a strong way to express their sympathy.”

As everyone is urged to stay at home, Wintonyk said the use of technology can help people get through their grief.

“Most of us have a cell phone … there’s a feature on our phone camera where you can record yourself leaving a message … they can send it to the funeral home and the funeral home can send that message to the family.”

Wintonyk mentioned a new directive from the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.

During this pandemic, funeral homes must promote, practice and organize safe distancing for the families and said the physical distance must be there for all people gathering in a group no matter the size.

“The order (is) 10 people or less at any one time … most funeral homes registered across this Province would be able to allow safe distancing with a small number of people.”

Wintonyk added they are finding people are acting responsibly in proper decision making by either postponing and looking at ways to prepare a live/virtual streaming event.
