Parking in Kitchener is going high tech.
The city is now using the app Passport Parking, which means customers using the downtown parking lots managed by the city, can now pay for and extend parking sessions from their phones.
“Adapting to evolving consumer trends is a priority for all the services provided by the city,” Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic said in a release. “As we all know, mobile payment solutions are becoming increasingly common for a variety of goods and services, and this new offering is a response to the expectations of the modern consumer. With so many technology companies moving to Kitchener or expanding their operations in the downtown core, this is a natural fit.”
Once customers install the app, they can select the lot in which they have parked and chose the duration of how long they will be parked there.
“This platform is a great example of how smart technologies can support and enhance the City of Kitchener's commitment to provide value and convenience to residents.” added Councillor Scott Davey.
Passport Parking is currently used in over 600 municipalities across North America.
The city says it selected the app because of its low cost to customers, compatibility with the city's existing systems and its flexibility as a technology platform.
It can be downloaded on both the App Store and Google Play.
