Soap Structure Contest creates relief kits to be sent overseas

Each year, the Bucket of Thanks event creates relief kits that are sent overseas to help communities across the world. This year is no different, with organizers hosting a Soap Structure Contest to encourage people across the region to participate.

Held by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), the Bucket of Thanks will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 65 Heritage Drive in New Hamburg.

The contest challenges teams to buy as many individually wrapped bars of soap as they need. They requires teams to use them to build something that shows off what peace means to you.

While the registration window to participate in the contest has closed, those interested are still being encouraged to watch the festivities or help pack relief kits.

Structures will be judged on their originality, stability and overall artistic flair, with the top two teams winning a prize.

After, the MCC says that all of the soap used will go towards “their relief work in communities affected by conflict and disaster.”

Admission to attend is free, though organizers are asking for donations of large bath or laundry bars of soap. The soap must still be in its original wrapping and weigh 85 grams or more to be accepted.

In the events news release, organizers suggested brands like Fels Naptha®, Sunlight® or Zote®. Adding that homemade laundry soap blocks of 150 grams or larger are acceptable.
