Busy Waterloo intersection to close overnight this week for paving

As watermain work continues on Columbia St. in Waterloo, paving will see the intersection of King St. and Columbia St. fully closed overnight Thursday and Friday.

It’s part of a $14-million plan for that roadway, spanning from Westmount Rd. to King St. The entire project will take until 2028 to complete.

Following the paving this week however, crews will be focused primarily on the portion of Columbia between King and Phillip until the end of November.

Lane restrictions will be in place for that, but both directions of traffic will be able to get through.

During overnight paving this week, regional officials warned there could be traffic and noise disruptions to those living and commuting in the area.

The exact hours of the overnight closure were not listed by the Region of Waterloo on its construction notice.

The two-year construction plan covers a lot of ground on Columbia.

It includes phased work from 2026 through to 2028 which will see crews on Columbia from Phillip through to Westmount next year, as well as watermain installation beneath the ION tracks between Philip Street and Hagey Boulevard.

Pavement is set to be replaced between King Street and Lester Street in the spring. And finally, paving and cycling infrastructure improvements are planned for 2028.
