Driver charged after crash involving LRT, truck in Kitchener

Police say a driver has been charged after a crash involving the LRT and a pick-up truck in Kitchener.
It happened late Tuesday morning on King St. West near Louisa St.
Photos from the scene showed a pick-up truck with airbags deployed, and damage to both the truck and the ION train – which was knocked off the LRT tracks.
Police initially said the involved truck driver sustained minor physical injuries but later confirmed that no injuries were reported resulting from the collision.
The truck driver, a 41-year-old man, was charged with careless driving.
The crash led to an ION disruption between Waterloo Public Square and the Kitchener Market.
An alert on Grand River Transit’s website said, “A truck collided with an ION light-rail train, pushing the train off the track. It will take some time to restore service, and the disruption could extend into this evening.”
ION replacement shuttle buses were dispatched to bridge the gap for transit riders.
Northbound lanes on King St. W. were closed for the collision investigation.
