It could be the final frame for Frederick Lanes

Avid bowlers in the region appear to be losing another place to play.

Social media has been buzzing this week with long time customers of AMF Frederick Lanes claiming the bowling ally will be closing.

The staple at Frederick Mall has been serving generations of KW residents, hosting birthday parties, league nights, PD days and first dates, among so many other events.

Kassandra Ahlin and Mason Tikl are members of the Monday Social League at Frederick Lanes. Ahlin told 570 NewsRadio, the pair had just arrived and were getting ready to bowl, Monday, when an announcement came over the P.A. system.

“They just let us know that as of the next week Wednesday, I believe it’s May 6, they were closing down permanently and they apologized,”

Ahlin said they were caught completely off guard, “It was just, out of nowhere. We had purchased our summer passes; we had signed up for the next leagues.”

So, she did the next logical thing and located the manager on duty.

“She (the manager) did confirm it, and she also mentioned that she had just found out an hour before us and she was in tears.”

Ahlin mentioned they were able to get a refund for the summer passes.

570 NewsRadio reached out on multiple occasions to the American parent company, Lucky Strike Entertainment, to confirm the closure. Those requests went unanswered.

The online lane reservation site shows no dates available after May 2.

Tikl said it looks like this announcement came as a surprise to everyone.

“The weekend before, they sent an email that said, ‘this new league that you registered is coming up, it starts in two weeks’,” he said.

He added, “That’s an indicator to just how abrupt this was.”

A loss for the community

Tikl went to say this closure is representative of a greater problem in the community.

“A friend of mine posted something to social media today and it wasn’t about this at all, and it said specifically; The near complete lack of low-cost, indoor, third spaces for adults in KW really sucks. It really sucks!”

Tikl also said the same is true for parents. Bowling is one of the last low cost activities left and now the community will be without that option.

The pair recognized there are other entertainment facilities that have bowling lanes, but they tend to cater to a different crowd and, in their opinion, not specifically league level bowlers.

Tikl said they’ve been in conversations about other options, and as far as she can see, the closest might be Woodstock.

In an effort to try to change the owners minds, a change.org petition has been launched.
