The City of Cambridge is preparing for the upcoming municipal election by outlining the policies and rules for candidates vying for a seat on council.
The city released a memo as part of the council information package on March 6, detailing some of the new and existing rules for would-be candidates. This includes the ways candidates can interact with city-owned properties, and the features they’re excluded from using as part of their campaigns.
Starting with signage, no campaign signs are allowed on city property, including election stickers on vehicles, meaning if a candidate puts an election sticker on their car, they can’t park in a city-owned lot.
For the currently-elected individuals seeking re-election, they can’t use their city email, phone, contact lists, printers, meeting rooms, staff or work hours to campaign.
Punishments for breaking any of those rules range from a verbal reminder, to public notices, and even termination or legal action.
The nomination period for the municipal election starts on May 1 and runs until Aug. 21, with the last council meeting of this current term set for Aug. 25.
Municipal election day is Oct. 26
