Waterloo regional police say one person has been apprehended after a weapons call that briefly placed several Kitchener schools into hold and secures.

It happened late Wednesday morning as police announced around 11 a.m. that Forest Heights Collegiate Institute (FHCI) was placed in a hold and secure as a safety precaution.

Police said it was due to a weapons-related call in the Fischer-Hallman and Queen’s Boulevard area.

A notice on FHCI’s website said students continued to learn in class during the hold and secure, “As the concern is outside of the school building, and many routines remain in place.”

At 11:12 a.m., police posted to social media that several other schools were placed in hold and secures including Westheights, Southridge, and Meadowlane public schools. St. Mark Catholic Elementary School and St. Paul Catholic Elementary School were also impacted.

Five minutes later, police confirmed that all of the hold and secures were lifted.

They said one person was taken into custody and that there are no ongoing public safety concerns.

Police confirmed to 570 NewsRadio that their investigation started shortly before 10:30 a.m. when they were called about a person in distress who had a knife.

They said schools in the area were advised to enter hold and secures as a precautionary measure until the individual could be safely located.
