12-year-old boy arrested for stealing family friend’s van

A boy in Guelph has a court date next month after police say he stole a van and later got into a crash with the vehicle.

Guelph police said the 12-year-old was staying at a family friend’s house at the end of January.

Around 8 a.m. Jan. 21, the woman who owned the van contacted police, saying her Dodge Caravan had been stolen.

She said her friend’s son, who had been staying over that night, was also not in the house.

That same woman later learned from a different police service that her stolen van had been involved in a hit-and-run crash with another stolen vehicle.

Damage from the crash was estimated at more than $10,000.

Just over a month after the crash and reported theft, a 12-year-old boy and his parent came into the Guelph police station.

The young boy was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle.
