Flooding possible with heavy rain Friday: GRCA

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is asking residents to stay safe around local waterways, with more rain on the way Friday.

The GRCA expects 5-15 mm of additional rain.

“Water levels and river flows may remain elevated into next week as runoff moves through the watershed,” read an update.

Flooding in low-lying areas is possible with river flows higher than normal for this time of year.

There is also the potential for ice jams as ice moves through the river, which can lead to flooding.

“Lake Erie is mostly ice covered, increasing the risk of ice jam related flooding at the mouth of the Grand River.”

Officials are also reminding everyone ice-skating and fishing on frozen ponds, reservoirs, and rivers is extremely dangerous right now, with the ice so unpredictable and breaking easily.

Ice fishing has since been closed at Belwood Lake, Guelph Lake, Shade’s Mills and Pinehurst Lake conservation areas.
