A watermain repair that required a giant hole to be dug out in the middle of the intersection of King and Fountain in Cambridge is still going to be a traffic issue on Tuesday morning.
A deep hole surrounded by construction fence and pylons was still gaping in the centre of the intersection on the first day back to work for most people after the Family Day long weekend.
The work began around 1 a.m. Friday to fix a break from earlier that week, with the City of Cambridge originally posting on social media that the work should be done by that afternoon.
But the road repair has since dragged on through the weekend.
On Sunday, the city posted an update that said, “a third-party utility was damaged during the watermain repair and must be fixed before the area can safely reopen.”
The post noted, “parts are being sourced, and repairs will begin as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Then on Tuesday afternoon, Mike Parsons, Director of Environmental Services with the City of Cambridge provided further information on the timeline of the repairs with a statement sent to CityNews Kitchener.
The statement said, “With forecasted freezing rain in the next day, we are anticipating repairs will be completed by the end of the day.”
Parsons added, “Depending on the timing of completion, paving operations could be delayed by rain.”
Detours are still in effect on King Street, Eagle Street, and Speedsville Road.
For now, there are still no left turns from King to Fountain Street, or from Fountain onto King.
Traffic coming from the direction of the Toyota plant can still go through the intersection, but traffic coming from Shantz Hill will be forced to turn down King.
