It’s not just dogs up for adoption this weekend as part of an annual event to help pets find homes. The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth is hosting a one-day only Fetch My Heart Adopt-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at both shelter locations for Valentine’s Day.
There’s about 50 to 60 four-legged companions ready to find their home between the two shelters. One of them, named Daisy, technically only has two legs and was recently rehabilitated.
“We have a duck that was brought in to us that was hurt,” Dennis Roberts, director of marketing and communications for the local humane society, said. “We have rehabilitated the duck, so if someone wants a duck for their farm or something like that, or a duck as a pet, they can take the duck as well.”
A special $100 reduction in the adoption fee for dogs is in place during the event. The humane society is encouraging anyone to come in, speak to staff, see if the personality is a match and fill out an adoption form.
Roberts said the humane society has an average number of animals up for adoption for this time of year.
There is hopes that some of their long-term residents will be adopted out for Valentine’s Day, including dogs that have been there for over 100 days.
“We have Miller who is up for adoption, he’s been here for 312 days, he is one of our long-term residents, same with Zeus. Zeus has been here for 114 days and Jonesy has been here for 173 days, so those are our long term residents,” Roberts said.

During the event information will be provided to anyone looking to foster a pet as Spring is around the corner which means kittens will soon start popping up needing to be bottle fed every two-hours.
