Arctic temperatures persist with a cold warning in place

It’s going to feel closer to -30 with wind chill values bringing frigid temperatures to Waterloo Region.

A yellow warning for cold weather was issued by Environment Canada on Monday, with a wind chill of -25 to -30 possible overnight into Tuesday. The weather authority is warning that extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

“Wind chill values will moderate through the day Tuesday, but are still expected to be -15 to -20,” it warns.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with a wind chill, it notes. Those most at risk for cold illnesses include young children, older adults and people outside lacking proper shelter.

Allister Aalders, 570’s Meteorologist, said that temperatures won’t return to the seasonal averages of -3 C until the first week of February.

“Highs near -10 C, -11 C Monday and Tuesday, and then -13 C, -14 C for the middle and later stages of the week,” added Aalders. “Waking up Friday could be in the mid-minus-twenties once again.”

It comes as the region is digging out from a large and strong low-pressure system that passed across the Great Lakes, covering most of southern Ontario.
