‘Move-in ready’: Conestoga’s new Stratford campus listed for lease

By Justin Koehler

Some changes may soon be on the way for Conestoga College’s Stratford campus, which has been listed for lease just months after welcoming in its first wave of students.

The campus, located at 60 Erie St. in Stratford, opened in September 2025, a move from its previous location at 130 Youngs St., where it was located for over 50 years.

According to the listing on the Canadian real estate website, Realtor.ca, the 22,000-square-foot property was quietly put online just over a month after its initial launch on Oct. 28.

“Situated in the heart of Downtown Stratford, 60 Erie Street offers a fully renovated move-in-ready space,” the listing said. “The strategic location boasts exceptional connectivity to Stratford and surrounding areas.”

The listing comes amidst some major changes at the top for Conestoga College as well, which announced the recent retirement of John Tibbits, who served as the college’s president for close to four decades.

As of now, the location can hold upwards of 800 students and currently consists of business-marketing, personal service work, and early childhood education courses.

While doors were opened at the beginning of the school year in September, after completing extensive renovations that wrapped up in 2024, Conestoga does not own the property itself.

A statement from Conestoga College said, “The college routinely evaluates its portfolio of leased and owned spaces to ensure alignment with enrolment demand and strategic priorities. This includes exploring potential leasing or real estate adjustments. At this time, no decisions have been made regarding 60 Erie Street.”

While questions have been raised around the future of the location, the future of those possibly impacted students, and the future of Conestoga College in Stratford as a whole, the listing comes amidst other recent changes to Conestoga’s physical properties.

Some of those include:

  • The Brantford campus on 274 Colborne St. ended all classes last spring, transitioning instead to its location at 50 Wellington St., in Brantford.
  • The downtown Kitchener campus on 49 Frederick St. ended all classes in August, moving to its other campus at 1 Young St.
  • The $90 million renovation to Guelph’s campus at 130 MacDonnell St. has been paused, with progress no longer moving forward.

The list of moves comes following a decline in enrollment for the institution, which has seen a decrease of 57 per cent compared with levels in the fall of 2023, down from a peak of 40,726 students to 17,714 during the most recent fall semester.

Much of that stems from international student enrollment, which has seen sweeping federal policy changes, restricting the access and number of students in institutions across Canada.

Conestoga saw some of the highest numbers of those international students, approving more than 30,000 foreign students in 2023, which was the highest total across the country.

The college has previously stated that the recent property changes, as well as a list of layoffs and staffing changes in recent months, are a result of those declining numbers and lost revenue.
