Ice, slush weigh down Wednesday commute

The freezing rain and heavy, wet snow that took over Waterloo Region and a large stretch of southern Ontario made for a messy morning commute on Wednesday.

Slippery conditions were the main concern with numerous reports to the 570 NewsRadio Traffic Centre about cars in the ditch, some completely flipped over and spun-out vehicles.

In Kitchener, a lengthy closure was put in place on Courtland Avenue near Block Line Road after a crash involving a hydro pole.

570 NewsRadio Meteorologist Carl Lam said warmer weather is on the way, but before then, prepare for tough road conditions.

“It’s going to be a real mixed bag today (Wednesday) across the region,” said Lam. “We start with a few flurries as this system pulls away, there could also be a little bit of patchy freezing drizzle.”

A warm-up is on the way for the rest of the work week, Lam said. Temperatures on Friday could warm up to nearly 10 C.

He warns, however, that it will dip back down to the negatives quickly.

“Get ready for a big temperature drop on Friday. It’s very windy, we’ll have rain rolling on through, and once that cold front slams through the region, temperatures will be coming down close to the freezing mark.”
