Hwy. 401 westbound re-opened at Cedar Creek, OPP

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A full closure of the westbound lanes on Highway 401 through Ayr from Friday has ended.

The closure took effect just before noon Nov. 28 from Cedar Creek Road to Oxford Road 29/Drumbo Road. The closure came to an end around 10:26 p.m. Friday night. In a video posted on social media, Constable Matt Foster said the shutdown was originally expected to last until approximately 6:00 p.m.

Foster said officials were on scene, but that at 3:00 p.m., collision clean-up had yet to begin.

“Tow trucks are currently on scene; however, we are waiting for collision clean-up to commence as all the vehicles that were stuck between Cedar Creek Road and Oxford 29 are currently being funnelled out,” he said.

When vehicles are escorted off the highway, and OPP can close the road entirely, is when cleanup can start.

Provincial police pointed to an earlier collision involving two tractor-trailers and said significant clean-up is ongoing due to an asphalt spill at the scene.

It followed another extensive closure in the eastbound 401 lanes through Drumbo due to icy conditions as the area was battered with plummeting temperatures and snow squalls.
