Driver caught going more than double the speed limit in Woolwich

Police are focusing on road safety in the rural townships of Waterloo Region by stopping people who are speeding excessively.

According to Waterloo regional police, officers were out on Line 86 in Woolwich Township on Sunday evening. The members from the North Division were prioritizing road safety as snow was rapidly falling in the region. Officials said they clocked a vehicle travelling 174 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, more than double the limit.

The person driving the Range Rover SUV was given several charges by officers including stunt driving (two counts), careless driving and speeding.

As a result, the vehicle was immediately impounded for two weeks and the driver given a 30-day licence suspension.

“Dangerous driving puts everyone at risk. Please slow down and drive responsibly,” police said in a press release.

This comes as police stopped another driver for stunt driving within the township last week. In that incident, officers were conducting speed enforcement on Sawmill Road in Woolwich.

They clocked a vehicle travelling more than double the limit: 104 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

In this situation, a 32-year-old Wellington Count man was charged with stunt driving, careless driving and speeding.
