Man arrested after driving on sidewalk near trick-or-treating children

A common reminder for trick-or-treaters is to remain on the sidewalk to avoid vehicles, but they don’t say what to do if a vehicle comes on the sidewalk.

That’s what happened on Friday.

Guelph police received a report of a hit-and-run collision near London Road and Woolwich Street shortly after 7:30 p.m. A witness said both involved vehicles drove north on Woolwich Street when one vehicle swerved onto the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic.

Police say a number of children were in the area for Halloween.

Both vehicles were located further north. Police requested one of the drivers provide a breath sample. The driver refused several times.

A 27-year-old Guelph man was arrested for failing to provide a breath sample. He also faces charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop at a collision, driving without insurance, driving with open alcohol and having alcohol in his system as a novice driver.

The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
