Pin nails found in chocolate bars after trick-or-treating in Cambridge, Kitchener

Regional police are asking parents to inspect their kids’ Halloween candy haul after small pin nails were found inside of two chocolate bars that were collected while trick-or-treating in Cambridge and Kitchener.

According to Waterloo regional police, the affected candy bar in Cambridge was collected in the area of Sunset Boulevard and Saxony Circle on Oct. 31. On Sunday, around 6 p.m., a caregiver found what police are calling a “small pin nail” inside a chocolate bar before alerting the authorities.

Then on Tuesday, police were called by a caregiver in Kitchener who said a small pin nail was discovered inside a chocolate bar that was collected on Halloween in the Hudson Crescent area of that city.

Nobody was injured in either incident, and a spokesperson for the Waterloo Regional Police Service confirmed both instances involved Coffee Crisp chocolate bars.

Police haven’t ruled out the possibility that the nails were left in the bars during the manufacturing or packaging process.

“The safety and well-being of our consumers is our number one priority, and we take all concerns very seriously,” said Catherine O’Brien, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Nestlé Canada.

“We have stringent quality control measures in place to ensure the safety and integrity of our products.”

O’Brien added in a statement to 570 NewsRadio that they have not been contacted by police in regards to any investigation, but if that changes, they will “cooperate fully.”

Police are reminding parents to inspect all candy before it’s consumed by children, and any candy that appears to have been tampered with should be thrown out immediately.

Anyone with information relating to these incidents is asked to contact police at 519-570-9777, ext. 2299.
